Outward Bound was created by Kurt Hahn in 1941 as a program of survival training for seamen in the British Merchant Marines. After World War II, the program continued and expanded to serve men and women of many ages with an emphasis on presenting progressively challenging opportunities to build self-confidence. Grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. Graduated from Johns Hopkins University after a World War II military interruption. Taught in both private and public schools. In 1955, founded Colorado Academy in Denver, a coeducational country day school. Also founded Colorado Outward Bound School. In 1970, started Copper Mountain Ski area.
